Beasley not so funny to opponents I’m not sure who will be more tickled to get Michael Beasley: the NBA team that drafts him or its beat writers.
The Kansas State freshman forward is a quote machine. In just a few minutes of interview time following the Wildcats’ 72-56 victory at Colorado, Beasley came up with three funny lines:
“Every win is an important win. If we go out there and beat Manhattan Middle School, it’s an important win for us.”
“I can go out and score ‘negative’ 87 points and not be disappointed if I played my best.”
“I just turned 19. It’s hard to think I’m a man (among boys) when I walk around with a ‘Spongebob’ T-shirt on.’’
And can Beasley (or is it Beastly?) ever play. Colorado tried to double-teamed him every time the ball came his way, and he still finished with 29 points. And that was after scoring just three in the first half and sitting out 10 minutes with foul trouble.
Considering that he’s 6-feet-10 and well beyond the 235 pounds listed by the school, it’s difficult to imagine his game being understated. But it is. Yes, he did throw down a monster jam. But most of his points result from being in the right place at the right time. That’s why he’s a tremendous rebounder.
I never thought I’d say this, but Michael Beasley might have an even better feel for the game than Kevin Durant had last season at Texas.
If you want flash and freakish hops, Kansas State’s other fabulous freshman, 6-6 Bill Walker, is your man. Mark down Walker as another future first-round pick. And hats off to him for not losing any spring in his step after recovering from ACL surgery that ended his 2006-2007 season after six games.
A credit to them and their basketball IQ, Beasley and Walker work in tandem like they’ve been teammates for three years. There aren’t enough defenders to stop both of them along the baseline. I’ll be shocked if the Kansas St Wildcats doent earn an NCAA Tournament bid – perhaps getting sent to the Pepsi Center for the first and second rounds.
And I pity the team that draws the Wildcats in the bracket.
