Meek: Chicago picks its Rose
After Chicago hit the jackpot in Tuesday's NBA draft lottery, I decided to conduct a survey.
I contacted several members of the Chicago media, looking for opinions on how the Bulls should use the top pick.
The results of my informal and unscientific research were not entirely surprising. Derrick Rose was the unanimous choice over Kansas State's Michael Beasley, which has been the general vibe coming out of Chicago in the days following the lottery.
"The consensus of our writers, and myself, is that Rose is the way to go, and, not because he's from Chicago, although that certainly won't hurt from a marketing standpoint," said Stu Courtney, sports editor of The Chicago Sun-Times. "As much as the Bulls do need a low-post scorer, they have a more urgent need for a point guard. Someone like Derrick Rose makes all his teammates better by delivering the ball and running the floor. He could help the underachieving likes of Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah reach their potential."
Rick Morrissey, columnist for The Chicago Tribune, said: "I just think what the Bulls need now is a leader and a winner, and Rose fits both those descriptions …."
We can talk about sample size later, but for now I think it's safe to declare Rose the winner in a landslide.
It's fascinating, though, to observe opinions outside the Windy City. In a nationwide ESPN poll, 60 percent of voters favored Beasley, while Rose received the majority of votes in only two states. Those states were Tennessee, where he played collegiately, and Illinois.
I'm not sure why Chicago supports Rose so staunchly when most of America seems to lean toward Beasley. That would require further faulty and unscientific research.
Maybe it's because people in Chicago feel a stronger pull to draft the hometown kid. Maybe it's because the rest of us didn't have to watch Kirk Hinrich last season.
Whatever the case, the people of Chicago have spoken.
Our quest to spread democracy has yet to reach NBA front offices, which means public opinion won't determine the Bulls' draft choice. Still, we can't ignore the fact that Rose is putting up better poll numbers in Chicago than Barack Obama.
